For those patients requiring more relaxation, we offer IV sedation. The major difference between IV sedation is the route through which the drug is administered. However, the sedation levels are moderate and generally more rapid in onset. The patient is monitored in the same manner as the orally sedated patient, and they also are instructed not to eat or drink after midnight. An IV line is started in the back of the hand or front of the elbow which remains in place until the patient is dismissed.
